Jacques Brel - "Le Moribond"

"Seasons in the Sun" is an English-language adaptation of the song "Le Moribond" by Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel[1]with lyrics by American singer-poet Rod McKuen.[2] It became a worldwide hit in 1974 for Canadian singer Terry Jacks and became a Christmas Number 1 in 1999 for Westlife. Jacks's version is one of the fewer than forty all-time singles to have sold 10 million copies worldwide.
The song is a dying protagonist's farewell to relatives and friends. The protagonist mentions how hard it will be to die now that the spring season has arrived (historically, spring is portrayed as the season of new life).

Original version

The original French-language song is a sardonic ballad, in which the speaker gives backhanded farewells to his adulterous wife and her lover and the priest he disagreed with while sarcastically expressing his wish that there should be singing and dancing when he is buried. Before Jacks popularized the song, earlier recordings had been released by The Kingston Trio with the first cover version of McKuen's translation in 1963 and the British band The Fortunes in 1968.

The Israel Lobby

Uploaded on Jan 30, 2012

The Israel lobby (at times called the Zionist lobby or sometimes the Jewish lobby) is the diverse coalition of those who, as individuals and as groups, seek to influence the foreign policy of the United States in support of Zionism, Israel or the specific policies of its government.[1] The lobby consists of Jewish-American secular and religious groups. The most famous and visible group within the Israel lobby is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). AIPAC and other groups within the Israel lobby influence American public policy in a variety of ways such as through education, responding to criticism of Israel, and putting forth arguments in support of Israel. The Israel lobby is known for its success in encouraging U.S. lawmakers to support the policies that it supports, such as vetoing the recognition of Palestine and the right for Israel to exist.

Helping is influenced by economic environment

Albert Camus
La peste

Helping is influenced by economic environment within the culture. In general, frequency of helping behavior is inversely related to the country economic status. It is true that appearances count as people make assumptions about the situation, but the deciding factor is the reaction of the people that first see the person in distress. The major explanation for people failing to stop and help a victim is how obsessed with haste they are. People who were in a hurry did not even notice the victim, although, once they arrived at their destination and had time to think about the consequences, they felt some guilt and anxiousness.

The possibility of enacting laws to punish passers-by who refuse to help people in obvious distress become a hot topic in the southern province of Guangdong, China in 2011. Legal experts and the public debated the idea after a hit-an-run victim was ignored by at least 18 passers-bys.

Yue Yue, the little girl victim, was finally moved to the roadside by a 57-year-old scrap collector, Chen Xianmei, who then called for the girl's parents. What Chen Xianmei did was to lift the brain-dead limp body of the child from the road and put it on the sidewalk before calling the mother. This trivial natural act that took her 12 seconds was deemed an heroic deed done for the sake of notoriety. The driver who first hit the toddler said in a telephone interview with a Guangdong television station that he had been talking on his phone when the girl walked in front of his vehicle. He said he kept driving because if she were dead, it would only cost him 10,000 to 20,000 renminbi ($1,500 to $3,000), but if she were alive, he would have to pay hundreds of thousands of renminbi in medical bills. As callous as this person might be, it is hard to believe that he would be so blunt on a public interview. Referring to the driver’s comments, one Internet user wrote, “If the compensation for a death were higher than the cost of medical care, these cases might not happen.” The writer added, it was “unrealistic” to expect a change soon, because for Chinese today, “all they can think about is food and clothes.”

The behavior of other people in similar situations suggest that it is indeed less of a trouble for the responsible party in a traffic accident to kill than to injure, and that, in any case, is not much of a deal if one has the right connections. Thus, the Chinese government has figure out yet another way to save a few renminbi by not requiring driver’s insurance and sending victims of traffic accidents to the trashcan if they happen to be poor.

China's population is split in two groups that the Chinese themselves call euphemistically city-dwellers (bureaucrats, technocrats, businessmen) and migrant workers (slave labor) . Chen Xianmei, the illiterate scrap peddler who picked up Foshan toddler Yueyue off the street, and who finally called for the little girl’s mother, illustrates of the moral and mental differences between the two groups. She left Guangzhou after being overwhelmed by media requests and offerings of cash. Chen's landlady even threatened eviction, due to the distraction of having media members lined up outside her apartment. Her neighbors claimed that she helped Yueyue to become famous. Dongguan, a home products company, gave her 100,000 RMB in cash, along with another 20,000RMB from the Foshan municipal government. Chen visited the hospital to see Yueyue's parents and give them all the cash she had received: "I don't even know how much this is. I've thinking only of the child, so I haven't even counted the money given to me these past few days. I've brought it all for the child." Chen left for her hometown of Qingyuan (清远) in Guangdong, to reunite with her husband. Chen had been working in Foshan since 2009 to be with her children.

The Telegraph posts that pedestrians may have been afraid to help Yue Yue because of China's "compensation culture." The paper refers to a 2006 judgment in which a person who helped a woman get to a hospital was "wrongly ordered to pay her compensation." Bystanders who did intervene to help others have found themselves accused of wrongdoing. In China, one is not expected to help a victim of an accident and the government actively discourages such acts. The Health Ministry in September issued new “Good Samaritan” guidelines that essentially warn passersby not to rush to help elderly people on the ground, but to first ascertain whether they are conscious and then wait for trained medical personnel to arrive.

In the eastern province of Jiangsu, a bus driver named Yin Hongbing stopped to help an elderly woman who had been struck by a hit-and-run driver. But until he was vindicated by surveillance videos, Yin was the one accused of hitting the woman. There have also been several cases of passersby stopping to help elderly people who had fallen, or were pushed, and who then were sued by the victims or were arrested. The thinking here is: They must have been responsible or they would not have stopped to help.

Empirical evidence and academic studies suggest that in an urban setting, the probability that a person in distress would be helped, depends heavily on the actions of the people present at the moment of the emergency and that the larger the crowd, the least likely help will be offered. There are many an example of this in the United States. The major explanation for people failing to stop and help a victim is how obsessed with haste they are.

Is there an absolute objective moral value? This is one of the first unsolvable questions of Philosophy. There are claims made by some that without God there would be no absolute morality. I do not follow the argument. The gist seems to be that since there is no objective basis for an absolute morality, and since an absolute morality seems to be a good thing, and since the existence of God would be an absolute reference, then God exists.

Dr. Mads Gilbert

Published on Aug 7, 2014
Dr. Mads Gilbert from Tromsø, Norway (Twin City with Gaza City), was working at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza during the last Israeli onslaugt on Gaza. When he returned from Gaza to his home-town Tromsø on July 31 2014, he went straight from the airport to give this spontaneous speech at a large solidarity demonstration for Gaza held at the same time. The regional newspaper "Nordlys" ("Northern Light") streamed the demonstration and featured Dr. Mads' speech on their web-site. They have donated the video. It was transcribed and subtitled in English through a solidarity effort by Norwegian film and video professionals. The video can be shared and used for non-commercial purposes.

Le Transperceneige

Snowpiercer (Korean: 설국열차; hanja: 雪國列車; RR: Seolgungnyeolcha) is a South Korean sci-fi action thriller film based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob & Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette. The film is directed by Bong Joon-ho,[4][5] and co-written by Bong and Kelly Masterson. The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Go Ah-sung, Jamie Bell, Ewen Bremner, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, and Ed Harris. The film marks Bong's English-language debut; he has mentioned that approximately 80% of the film was shot in English.[6][7] On November 9, 2012, The Weinstein Company secured distribution rights in North America, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The much-anticipated film Snowpiercer has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Renowned Korean director Bong Joon-ho helms a stunningly crafted film with a solid, recognizable cast including Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, John Hurt, Jamie Bell and Octavia Spencer, not to mention award-winning  Korean actors Song Kang-ho and Go Ah-sung.
This film is a major breakthrough for both Bong Joon-ho and Korea as it would be the first Korean film to get a major American release with the potential to do very well with American audiences. Snowpiercer, almost entirely in English, has already been released in Korea and France (with upcoming releases in Japan, Germany, Sweden and other non-English-speaking countries ) to both great financial and critical success.
So why has no release been scheduled in the U.S?
The Weinstein Company secured the rights to distribute Snowpiercer in the U.S (in addition to the UK, Australia and New Zealand, which are also being deprived of the director's cut). However the company, and namely Harvey Weinstein, has demanded 25 minutes of the director’s final cut be removed in addition to placing voice-overs within the film to make it more marketable to a general American audience. Director Bong Joon-ho stands by his original cut, as does much of the cast and crew, believing the film will suffer a loss of message, character development and depth should this happen. Additionally many believe American audiences are more than capable of understanding and appreciating this film without the aid of further cuts and voice-overs. Many consider the Weinstein cut will turn a powerfully-themed film with a distinct message into an action/thriller movie with no more depth than many of the mediocre action movies plaguing US theaters currently.
It comes down to a question of ethics and the dictation of what American audiences are capable of understanding.
"The goal, said TWC [The Weinstein Company] when explaining the request to Bong, is to make sure his film ‘will be understood by audiences in Iowa… and Oklahoma.’ Weinstein also asked for introductory and closing voice-overs to be added in” [http://screenrant.com/snowpiercer-deleted-scenes-us-theatrical-cut-version/].
If artistic imports such as Snowpiercer are continuously reconditioned to cater to a perceived American inability to think outside our own borders and comfort zone then that inability will only continue indefinitely, and the international perception of our own self-serving narrowmindedness will remain deserved.
Kaori Shoji of The Japan Times said this of the film: “As far as I’m concerned, this is required viewing for every human being on the planet” [http://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2014/01/02/films/our-movie-highlights-of-the-coming-year/#.Us-cePRDvng].
Let us show Mr. Weinstein that holding this film hostage until the director concedes to his unreasonable demands are not acceptable. The vision of the artist, in this case the director, should be given priority in cooperation with marketing strategies. Altering a work of art to the point where its meaning is lost and no longer discernable to simply make it more palatable is not acceptable. This film, which many have been anticipating for so long, has the potential to make a very stunning point about social classes and the dangers of elitism, an issue that has become prominent in the United States recently.
We must show Mr. Weinstein that we, as Americans, will not stand to be insulted by the insinuation that the general American populace is incapable or unwilling to appreciate a ground-breaking dramatic film from an Asian director, focusing on relevant anthropological issues.

Cuba 2012

Published on May 14, 2013

Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve heads to Cuba to find a communist country in the middle of a capitalist revolution. Two years ago Cuba announced the most sweeping and radical economic reforms the country has seen in decades. From ending state rationing to cutting one million public-sector jobs, one of the last communist bastions in the world has begun rolling back the state on an unprecedented scale. Simon Reeve meets ordinary Cubans whose lives are being transformed, from the owners of fledgling businesses to the newly rich estate agents selling properties worth up to 750,000 pounds.
